The Kalahari Lions of Tswalu
The Kalahari black-maned Lion's name is Norman; he and his brother, well, a cousin named Zwaai, were a very successful coalition at Addo Game Reserve in South Africa.
Norman was born in Addo, Zwaai in August 2008, to the same father, Jack, but a different mother.
Gibson and Melvin were born in 2010 to the same father, Jack.
When these two coalitions, Norman and Zwaai, Melvin and Gibson, reached adulthood, they became enemies. Each coalition attempted to establish itself as the dominant coalition.
Norman and Zwaai were relocated to Tswalu in the Kalahari in 2019 to help diversify the lion gene pool. Melvin and Gibson were also relocated to Tswalu later that year.
What was surprising was that everyone expected the coalitions to resume their rivalry. But instead, they formed a coalition of four. From enemies to friends.
