I trekked these magnificent seven bull elephants for days. They proved elusive, feeding in woods where I couldn't follow. I predicted their movement, parked near a game trail close to a waterhole, and waited.

Hours later, they arrived. Marching in single file, silent, huge — the lead bull spread his enormous ears. I pressed the shutter.

Etosha's "grey ghosts" are among the largest elephants in Africa. Their tusks are shorter, their skin coated in white dust from the pan, moving across the landscape like apparitions.
