I can still taste the sand in the air. The berg wind carried desert sand and fine calcrete dust, turning the sky to a muted middle grey and making my eyes water. Etosha Pan stretched before me, its surface scarred with cracks and glistening through a heat haze. Sparse vegetation along the edges acted as a natural vignette, framing the scene.
Through the shimmering heat, distant forms of animals appeared, slowly making their way to the pan's edge for life-saving water. A beautiful S-shaped stream snaked its way into the pan’s surface, creating a striking composition in the stark environment. My senses heightened as I envisioned how to compose a photograph that would encapsulate the essence of this moment. Like a street photographer, I decided to wait patiently for the perfect subject to appear.
Earlier that day, 50 kilometres away, I had noticed two giraffes striding purposefully along the edge of the pan. Their journey puzzled me—there were no trees or bushes in the direction they were heading. Little did I know, these same giraffes would complete my vision by arriving at the waterhole I watched.
Hours passed. Scores of animals came and went, quenching their thirst. Despite the activity, I had yet to capture a single frame. Then, in the distance, I spotted the giraffes. My heart raced as I realized the distance they had travelled to reach the spring before me.
This waterhole, situated on the edge of Etosha Pan, is a notorious lion ambush site. The sun-whitened remains of previous victims were a chilling reminder of the danger. Fully aware of the risks, the giraffes approached cautiously. One took position at the top of the stream, facing west, while the other stood in the middle, facing east. They alternated turns drinking and keeping watch, protecting one another from an ambush.
As they stood upright in unison, I steadied myself, peered through the viewfinder, and pressed the shutter. In that moment, I captured not just an image, but a story of resilience, caution, and the remarkable bond between these gentle giants—a moment that will remain etched in my memory forever.
